About

Mission, vision & values

Written down because a hundred centres in five states cannot be run on instinct alone.

Our vision

To be a globally accredited human resource centre of excellence, catalysing sustainable livelihoods in the less developed markets across the globe.

Our mission

To give young people in underdeveloped regions high quality vocational education and skill training, relevant and recognised certification, and — through it — meaningful employment and a career in the organised sector.

We work where the institutional capacity does not exist yet: districts with high dropout rates, large unskilled workforces and few employers of scale.

Our values

Four things we do not trade away.

Bhanu, who trained as a sewing machine operator and was placed at Shahi Exports

Dignity of labour

A machinist, a sewing operator and a lab technician are professionals. Everything from how a workshop is kept to how a trainer speaks follows from that.

Nobody is written off

School dropouts, deaf trainees, a young man with one hand who wanted to make coffee. If someone will do the work, our job is to find the route.

Measure honestly

Daily assessment on accuracy, process and time. Third-party certification. Placement tracked after the fact, not promised in advance.

Stay after placement

The first six months in a new city decide whether a placement holds. Post-placement support is part of the programme, not a favour.

What we develop

Six dimensions of skill.

A trade certificate on its own does not hold a job. These six are assessed together, because employers hire and keep people on all of them.

The six dimensions of skill Gram Tarang develops and assesses
  1. 01

    Numeracy

Using mathematical understanding to solve problems on the job — workshop measurement, calculation, basic arithmetic.

  2. 02

    Literacy

Reading and understanding the forms of communication the trade requires: spoken language, printed text, digital media.

  3. 03

    Technical domain

The trade-specific core knowledge and practical skill that constitutes expertise.

  4. 04

    Professional

The behaviours that build a career: ethics, integrity, teamwork, communication, planning, time management, leadership.

  5. 05

    Life skills

Adaptive behaviour for the demands of working life — IT literacy, financial planning, health, hygiene and sanitation.

  6. 06

    Entrepreneurial

Live production experience and incubation support for those who want to become nano, mini or micro entrepreneurs.
